What is Glass? L013

Glass shows up just about everywhere. We use it in windows, tableware, containers, jewelry, and of course much more. The most common type of glass — and the type manufactured by Bullseye — is called “soda-lime glass.” Soda-lime refers to the composition of the glass, which is primarily silica, soda (sodium carbonate), and lime (calcium oxide).

But for our purposes, glass serves as a unique art-making material. Artists from all over the world use it to make all kinds of objects through a variety of methods. Some artists blow glass while others form it in a kiln through a process called kilnforming.

This lesson highlights the fundamental properties of glass. It covers the basic forms of art glass and their uses. Finally, it surveys how art glass is made at Bullseye Glass Company.
